International Symposium on Persistent Toxic Substances, PTS 2026, Longyearbyen, Svalbard, 2–4 November 2026

Welcome to the Arctic

PTS 2026 invites you to one of the world's most extraordinary conference destinations. From 2–4 November 2026, participants will gather at Funken Lodge in Longyearbyen, Svalbard—only about 1,300 km from the North Pole. During this time of year, the sun remains below the horizon, but the Arctic is illuminated by the magical blue twilight and, weather permitting, the spectacular Northern Lights.

Join us for an outstanding scientific programme while experiencing the unique atmosphere of the High Arctic.

Polar light viewing : Weather permitting, we will try to arrange the spectacular Northern Lights viewing  (Aurora borealis) during the confernce.

If You Wish to Extend Your Stay to get the most out of you visit

Why not combine PTS 2026 with an Arctic holiday? Longyearbyen offers an excellent opportunity to experience one of the world's most fascinating Arctic communities. You may wish to extend your stay to explore the town, visit museums and galleries, enjoy local restaurants and cafés, or join one of the many guided excursions available during the polar night.

Walking is perfectly safe within the settled area of Longyearbyen. However, visitors should always follow local safety advice and any polar bear warnings issued by the Governor of Svalbard. Outside the settlement, there is a genuine risk of encountering polar bears. Visitors should therefore only travel beyond the town limits as part of an organised excursion or with experienced guides carrying the appropriate safety equipment and firearms.

The Tourist Information Centre and hotel reception desks can provide advice and assist with booking guided tours and activities.
