Welcome to the Arctic
PTS 2026 invites you to one of the world's most extraordinary conference destinations. From 2–4 November 2026, participants will gather at Funken Lodge in Longyearbyen, Svalbard—only about 1,300 km from the North Pole. During the last middle of October the sun disappears below the horizon, but leave Longyearbyen illuminated in daytime by the magical blue twilight for several weeks and start to show the spectacular Northern Lights in the nights. Join us for an outstanding scientific programme while experiencing the unique atmosphere of the High Arctic.
Climate and clothing: Early November in Longyearbyen my be cold, dark and often windy, with temperatures typically around –5 to –15 °C, but occasionally much lower. Participants should bring warm, windproof winter clothing, preferably in several layers of wool or fleece, together with a warm winter hat, gloves or mittens, scarf/balaclava and insulated winter boots. Ice grips/spikes for footwear are recommended, as roads and paths may be slippery. Reflective clothing or a high-visibility vest is also useful during the dark season. The latter items are available in most shops in Longyearbyen, as well as huge possibilities to buy suitable winter and sport clothes.
Polar night and Northern light viewing in Longyearbyen: Weather permitting, we will try to arrange Northern Lights viewing (Aurora borealis) during the conference. This will be done in two ways:
Adjacent to the FUNKEN lodge on a day with convenient weather. This has no cost
Northern Lights Evening at Camp Barentz – 19:00–22:00 (NOK 1595): A bus takes you into darkness of Adventdalen to Camp Barentz. Around the open fire, we will enjoy a traditional Svalbard meal of reindeer bidos, drinks, campfire coffee and dessert, while our host introduces us to the fascinating science and history of the Aurora Borealis. Far from the lights of Longyearbyen, Camp Barentz offers excellent location for viewing northern lights, We recommend to make this registration after arrival on Sunday 1st November after having checked the weather forecast and checking how many participants who want to go on this event. If You Wish to Extend Your Stay to get the most out of you visit
Why not combine PTS 2026 with an Arctic holiday? Longyearbyen offers an excellent opportunity to experience one of the world's most fascinating Arctic communities. You may wish to extend your stay to explore the town, visit museums and galleries, enjoy local restaurants and cafés, or join one of the many guided excursions available during the polar night.
Walking is perfectly safe within the settled area of Longyearbyen. However, visitors should always follow local safety advice and any polar bear warnings issued by the Governor of Svalbard. Outside the settlement, there is a genuine risk of encountering polar bears. Visitors should therefore only travel beyond the town limits as part of an organised excursion or with experienced guides carrying the appropriate safety equipment and firearms.
